The short answer
We want this site to work for everyone, including people using a screen reader, keyboard navigation or a magnified display. We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. Some of it we know is good, some we have not formally tested, and we would rather say which is which than claim full compliance.
What we have done
- Real headings in order. Every page uses one H1 and properly nested H2s, so a screen reader can move through the structure.
- Text, not pictures of text. Figures and tables are real text and can be read aloud, magnified and copied.
- Contrast. Body text and headings are dark on light. Our lightest brand colour is used only for rules and borders, never for text, because it does not carry enough contrast.
- Meaningful link text. Links describe where they go rather than saying “click here”, which matters when a screen reader lists them.
- No pop-ups, no interstitials, no cookie banner in the way of the content.
- Reflows on small screens and when text is enlarged, without horizontal scrolling.
- Tools work with a keyboard and use standard form controls rather than custom widgets.
What we know is not perfect
Being straight about this is more useful than a blanket claim.
- We have not commissioned a formal independent audit. Our testing is our own.
- Some tables are wide. On a narrow screen a table of figures may need horizontal scrolling within the table.
- Some pages are long. The pillar pages are detailed by design, which is good for depth and harder for navigation.
- Images are not yet in place. Alt text is written for each one and will be applied as they are added.
If something does not work for you
Please email help@legalaid60.org.uk. Say what you were trying to do, what happened, and what you were using, and we will fix it or find another way to get you the information.
If you need something on this site in a different format, ask. We would rather send you a plain text version of a page than have you go without it.
